A Seed is the random noise that starts image generation for all four grid images at once. Put an ✉️react on the grid to get the seed. *You may need to check your privacy settings to receive messages from the bot. Note: When using seeds, images may not look identical due to non-deterministic GPUs. What is --sameseed? What do seeds do? So, let's bust some myths about seeds: Seeds can not transfer the style or appearance of images across jobs. Seeds can not be used to 'bookmark' styles or appearance. (i.e. "Use seed XYZ for that!") Seeds are the weakest force in Midjourney. In --v 5 they may not work as expected at all. Seeds are randomly generated noise. Imagine a snapshot of television static. This field of noise serves as the blank starting page Midjourney uses to render images. If the starter page (called a parent image) is provided by a variation, remix, or image reference, then seeds aren't in play anymore. That means they're used only by plain text prompts and only during initial /imagine command.. For the technically minded, here's a more in-depth explanation: Midjourney uses a random variable called a seed to create a field of visual noise (like television static) which is used as a de facto starting point for rendering your image if there is no other parent image provided. The rendering process, handled by a neural network and a diffusion model, makes billions of decisions about the correct placement or removal of those random pixels according to billions of lessons it learned based on billions of other pictures it has examined. Gradually, through these billion decisions, Midjourney transforms the random pixels to an image that strives to express the correct pixel placement for your prompt. `That "canvas of random visual noise" where Midjourney starts the rendering process is determined by a randomly generated number called a seed.` Here are the seed-related commands in Midjourney: To get the --seed value for an image, react to it in Discord with an ✉️ envelope. To get the --seed for a past image, copy the job ID from the website details menu and use the /show job_id command with that ID, then react to the display that appears with an ✉️ envelope. To use it, add it to the prompt: I am a prompt --seed N (where N is the value of the seed). Seeds in --v 5: prompt-faqs📕 Seeds Can I use seeds from prior creations? No. Seeds change. While you might know the seed value is X for your image, soon enough that name will point to a different "starter page of random noise" than it did when you first made that image. That means the utility of the seed value is limited to a time period. Can I use seeds to make copies of images? No, or, only in --v 4. When paired with your (not-ever-remixed) prompt :plus: AND :plus: parameters together, the seed+prompt+parameters combination can recreate your (not-ever-remixed) image. You'll also have to use the same rendering mod: the seed pool is different for relax mode and fast mode, so if you're trying to use a seed, you'll need to match the mode as well. What is the purpose of seeds to the artist/user? The primary reason to use seeds is for troubleshooting and testing purposes. You can specify the seed with --seed N at the end of the prompt, where N is an integer between 100 and 400,000. This will lock the image solidly enough that you can get a feel for the effects of other changes you're making. Whenever you're testing, troubleshooting, or experimenting, make sure to lock the --seed to some value. --- ![image](./img/midjourney.png) [^1]: https://docs.midjourney.com
